Schloss Heidelberg

Overlooking the city, Heidelberg Castle is one of Germany’s best-known cultural icons.

Between the 13^th and the 18^th century, this massive fortress was also a royal residence. Since war and fire ravaged the buildings, the castle has been a romantic Renaissance ruin. Admission to the castle courtyard includes entry to the Apothecary Museum and the Great Vat, a 52,000-gallon (200,000-liter) wine barrel. In summer, the courtyard is a backdrop for classical concerts, operas and theater.
