State Palaces and Gardens

State Palaces and Gardens of SouthWest Germany: this umbrella organization looks after some 59 of Baden-Württemberg’s most beautiful palaces, castles, monasteries, gardens, and ruins.

SouthWest Germany is dotted with beautiful palaces and castles, monasteries and gardens. There are 59 that are maintained by the state and open to the public. All offer a glimpse of the past and a taste of the region’s rich history and heritage.

What’s new?
2011 kicks off with a really unusual exhibition, whose intriguing title is “The smallest room in the house: taboos and cleanliness at court.” In the spring, the Schussenried Monastery in Upper Swabia is displaying those intimate items of everyday life that we don’t usually like to mention. We’re talking personal hygiene in times gone by, long before hot water was instantly available at the turn of a tap. Objects from SouthWest Germany’s State Palaces and Gardens tell the story of how people survived long, hard winters before home heating was invented. And, how they managed in castles where there were no toilets!
