Reichenau Island

Today, this island on Lake Constance is known for growing vegetables, thanks to its gentle climate.

But back in the 8th century, before a causeway connected the island to the mainland, Benedictine monks knew this was a perfect spot to found a monastery. Over the next two centuries, it grew into an intellectual and cultural hotspot. Today, you can see three Romanesque churches (from the 9^th-12^th centuries) that are remarkable examples of early medieval architecture. Elaborate wall paintings are a particular highlight. The related museums provide insights into medieval monastic life; as for the present, everyone enjoys a stroll round the delightful monastery island of Reichenau.
