Schnapps
Schnapps is a German fruit brandy much enjoyed in Germany in general and SouthWest Germany in particular. Rather than the sweet liqueur-style American schnapps, this is clear and strong. The most famous is Black Forest Kirschwasser, made from cherries. But, the region’s orchards also produce plentiful apples, pears, peaches, plums, and apricots – perfect for distilling.
Black Forest Distilleries
Half of Germany’s 14,000 distilleries are in the South Baden part of SouthWest Germany. Thanks to the mild climate and fertile soil, fruits and berries thrive in the valleys and the forest. The farmers’ tradition of distilling excess fruit from bountiful harvests dates back to the 17th century.
Spring flowers
For many, the prettiest time of year in the Black Forest is spring, when the cherry, plum, pear, and apple trees are in full bloom, turning the hillsides white with blossom. The mild climate, with its sunshine and warm breezes, goes on to produce delicious ripe fruit, the basis for excellent fruit brandies.
Oberkirch: The Distilling Capital
In Oberkirch in the Renchtal valley, locals have been distilling for almost 300 years. Today, there are some 900 independent distilleries making fruit schnapps like plum, pear and raspberry, as well as more unusual flavors. Go on, be brave: try schnapps made from sloes, the fruit of the blackthorn!
Kirsch: a world-famous specialty
If there is one fruit brandy that is more famous than the rest, it has to be Kirschwasser. Translated as “cherry water,” this clear, strong, fragrant schnapps comes from the Black Forest. It takes some 20 pounds of the best ripe cherries to make one bottle of genuine Kirsch.
At the end of a fine meal…
Traditionally, a small glass of schnapps/fruit brandy is enjoyed after dinner, partly for pleasure and partly to help digestion. Remember, when in Rome…
