Hauff Primeval Museum

The Swabian Mountains are rich with fossils that date back to the Jurassic period, 180 million years ago. Back then, all of Europe was flooded by a tropical sea.

Dinosaurs loved the warm water, and their skeletons remain: nowhere else in the world is so rich in ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, crocodile dinosaurs, pterosaurs, fish, crinoids, ammonites and belemnites. Dug up in the slate quarries around Holzmaden during the past century, they are all on show in the museum.

Holzmaden is 25 miles/40 km southeast of Stuttgart.

Open year-round, Tuesday to Sunday 9 to 5pm.
Closed Mondays, Christmas, New Year.
Open on holidays.
