This UNESCO World Heritage site has 1,000-year-old churches, as well as the astonishing Abbey of Reichenau itself. Reflecting an even older era is Unteruhldingen, an open air museum where they have reconstructed a Neolithic and Bronze Age village, set on wooden piles in the lake. And, for a gorgeous drive, take the Upper Swabian Baroque route, dotted with more than 100 historic monasteries, churches and castles along the way.

Feasting on Lake Constance

No vacation is complete without a meal of “Felchen”, the best known and most popular fish from Lake Constance. The best accompaniment for this fresh-water white fish is a local white wine, such as a Müller-Thurgau. The mild climate round the lake is perfect for grapes, and a summer highlight is one of the many wine festivals. The lake region is also known for its orchards, especially Lake Constance apples. That’s why harvest time in autumn is a lovely time to visit.

The region has many wellness hotels and spa resorts. Several are right on the lake itself. Hotels in Überlingen and Meersburg offer sauna and soothing “Hot Stone,” treatments, with relaxing views of the deep blue lake and the snow-capped Alps.
