Craftsmen have already been working for several years to build a medieval monastery like the one drawn and described by monks on the island of Reichenau in the 9th century: a large abbey church, living quarters, workshops, stables and gardens.

But how did people build 1200 years ago? How did people split shingles, forge an axe or dye wool? What cereals grew in the fields and what medicinal herbs in the gardens? The medieval building site is as much a research project as it is an open-air museum. Visitors are immersed in a world where there were no machines and every step had to be done by hand, laboriously, in wind and weather.
