Description
During his time here as an apprentice gardener the Eichtersheimer Friedrich Ries and later horticultural director gained an essential influence on his later sphere of activity.
Horticultural director Ries has created many public facilities in Karlsruhe, including the Karlsruhe city garden, in which a bust of memory can still be seen today.
With its old trees, some of which are botanical features, the castle park is a popular destination for excursions and recreation.
The eye-catcher of the castle park is undoubtedly the moated castle built in the 16th century. It was built by the then Lords of Venningen and served as a stately home until the middle of the last century. In the 1960s, the municipality was able to acquire the castle with the castle park. In 1980 the castle was converted into a town hall after long and careful consideration. In retrospect, it can be said that this was a happy and forward-looking decision.
Art in the castle park
The castle park has been enriched in recent years with works of art by the artist Prof. Jürgen Goertz living here. Prof. Goertz, who has already made a name for himself among experts, has made the sculptures available for installation in the palace park. Although critical voices can be heard from time to time, the majority of visitors view the works of art with interest and approval. Goertz' works of art can also be seen on the redesigned Friedrich-Hecker-Platz. The sculpture "Hecker's Dream", which is set up directly in front of the Heckerhaus, has a special reference to the location.
