Already in 1820 it was recognized as necessary to build an official prison in Sinsheim. The detention cell in the "Blue Tower", part of the former city fortifications, had long been dilapidated and no longer protected against escape. In 1829, a new detention room was temporarily set up in the “Hoffenheimer Tor”. It was not until 1843 that the new prison was built. The ten new prison rooms were useful during the uprisings in the turmoil of the Baden Revolution in 1848/1849. Numerous radical Republicans have been arrested and charged with treason.
