Description
The market square is situated in the heart of Freudenstadt and is the main landmark of the city.
The floor plan was based on the board game ‘Mühle’, known as mill or morris in English. The market square is crossed by streets and is therefore divided into three parts. These parts are called Oberer Marktplatz, Unterer Marktplatz and Postplatz. A wide variety of markets take place on the upper market square, while the adjoining buildings around the market square contain arcades. Originally, the corners of the square featured Winkelhaken buildings. Today two of these still stand, the town church and the Schickhardt building, which houses the local police station.
In 1999, the lower market square was redesigned and today, with its 50 water fountains and many green areas, offers space to rest, relax and enjoy the day.
Restaurants, cafés and various retail shops line the entire market square, inviting people to go shopping under the arcades.
