Between Sigmaringen and Riedlingen, the Heuneburg, the oldest city north of the Alps, is enthroned directly above the Danube in a dreamlike landscape. In the Hallstatt period in the 6th century BC, it experienced its heyday as a Celtic trading center with about 5000 inhabitants and is mentioned by the Greek author Herodotus as Polis Pyrene. Its important position was manifested by burial mounds and representative splendid buildings, which are visible today as reconstructions, such as the once north of the Alps unique mud-brick wall or the stone gate to the outer castle.
A variety of guided tours and workshops as well as living history events allow visitors to immerse themselves in the life of the Celts, while exhibitions of the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments of Baden-Württemberg provide information about the current excavation results. Coffee in the afternoon sun, concerts at dusk with a dreamlike view over the Danube valley make the visit an experience.

On Sundays, there are hands-on activities for families and a guided tour without registration at 1:30 pm. Various guided tour formats, children's birthday parties and varied workshop offers such as slingshot making, hallmarking or felting wool can be booked in advance.A barbecue area with a fantastic view or the kiosk with sun terrace invite you to linger over coffee and cake specialties or small snacks.

The 8 km long archaeological circular hiking trail leads from the Heuneburg to the square enclosures and burial mounds located in the surrounding area, such as the Hohmichele.
