Description
The park was originally the private garden of Christian Wilhelm Jamm, a resident of Lahr who bequeathed the garden to the city following his death in 1875. Since that time, the area has been repeatedly expanded, and carefully enriched with a number of different garden areas, raising it to a high level of horticulture. Today, the 4.5 hectare park offers fun for all the family.
The park's centrepiece is the rose garden. Created in 1985, it is divided geometrically by box hedges, and contains more than 250 rose varieties. It is surrounded by many ancient trees, a lot of them rarities. It is also framed by extensive rhododendron beds, and shrubs and ponds arranged in the style of an English garden. In the summer, the many palm trees, the Mediterranean flora on the terraces and the cactus garden lend the City Park its southern atmosphere. The plantings change with the seasons, with thousands of tulips in the spring, summer flowers, lavish carpets of different plants arranged according to old tradition, and delightful dahlias in the autumn, guaranteeing a horticultural show all year round.
The many animals have always been a favourite attraction of the City Park. Children in particular love the peacocks, birds, monkeys, pygmy goats, deer, ponies, meerkats, squirrel monkeys and other animals wandering around. Children also enjoy the exciting play area with its 1,500 square metre maze and the sensory adventure islands. As a further attraction, Lahr City Park, at the heart of Lahr, is also host to numerous major events.
