Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg (1744-1793) commissioned the palace in the heart of the city. It was the last of the great Baroque royal residences to be built in Germany and the Duke was determined to make Stuttgart a second Versailles. Today, the New Palace houses various ministries and state reception rooms.
In summertime, the Palace Square is a very popular place where locals like to relax and linger on the greens surrounding the fountain and the New Palace. The Square is a vibrant hub at the heart of the city and of the Stuttgart’s shopping precinct “Königsstraße”. This is a place where lifestyle and history meet!
The Square is key to many important events in the city such as the Stuttgart Summer Festival. In wintertime, a beautiful Christmas market and an ice skating rink draw visitors.
