The Hotzenwälder Wuhre watercourses
The Vorderer Hotzenwald forest features many artificial watercourses known as ‘Wuhre’ or ‘Wühre’, mostly constructed during the Middle Ages. They were generally used to irrigate meadows. However, three of the large and several of the smaller channels probably had a different purpose from the outset, namely supplying sufficient water to the waterwheels of mills. The ‘Wuhre’ are best discovered on a summer treasure hunt: details are available from tourist information offices.
