Rococo library in the former Benedictine abbey

The former Benedictine abbey’s library, launched byAbbot Ulrich Bürgi, was not completed until 13 years after his death byAbbot Philipp Jacob Steyrer, following the plans of architectPeter Thumb(1752). Built entirely in the rococo style, it is strongly characterized by the works of the monastery sculptorsChristianWenzingeras well asMatthias Faller, who lived and worked in St. Peter for 10 years. The splendid ceiling frescos were painted byBenedikt Gamps. The allegorical figures on the gallery, which represent different fields of knowledge, are works by Matthias Faller, modelled according to the plans of the artist Christian Wenzinger. Six of the 12 original figures remain.

The library, like the rest of the abbey, can only be visited during exclusive tours which are offered three times a week.
