The history of the Municipal Gallery collection goes back to the 19th century, but it only moved in May 1981, when it opened within the Prince Max Palais. The next 15 years would see the gallery host over 60 special exhibitions. In the summer of 1997, the Municipal Gallery moved again to a new, more spacious home in Lichthof 10 of Hall Building A (Hallenbau A) on Lorenzstraße. Located at the same venue, it now shares a home with the Center for Art and Media (ZKM).
