Beschreibung
The State Art Gallery (Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe) in Karlsruhe sees itself as an agent between the past, present and future. It does not focus exclusively on preserving the legacy of several centuries, but aims instead to establish a modern dialogue with the historic collection and its valuable extension.
Opened in 1846, the art gallery is one of the few art museums in Germany that has largely maintained the original works of the collection it showcased in its early years. It spans three historic buildings at the edge of the Botanical Gardens. The main building and the Orangery are home to a permanent display of around 800 paintings covering the late middle ages to the present. The Youth Gallery exhibits changing collections that are particularly interesting for children and adolescents. The Copperplate Cabinet contains more than 90,000 prints and is one of the oldest collections of graphical art in Europe. The library features more than 150,000 volumes and is one of the largest public museum libraries in southern Germany.
