The Stuttgart State Gallery presents paintings and sculptures from the 14th to the 21st century in its permanent exhibition. Among the much-admired masterpieces of the Stuttgart Collection are Oskar Schemer’s “Triadic Ballet”, the Joseph-Beuys Room and the twelve-part altar piece “Graue Passion” by Hans Holbein the Elder.

The State Gallery displays oeuvres of the great names of art history like Cranach, Tiepolo, Rubens, Rembrandt, Caspar David Friedrich, Renoir, Cézanne, Gauguin, Franz Marc, Picasso, Dalí and Warhol. Furthermore, there are special exhibitions focusing on the oeuvre of renowned artists such as Beckmann, Matisse, Monet, William Turner and the American painter Cy Twombly.

The Stuttgart State Gallery is also known for its ground-breaking architecture. The oldest part of the Complex, the “Old State Gallery” (1843) was joint by an extension: the New State Gallery. Built in the year 1984, it is a masterpiece of postmodernist architecture and was designed by star architect Sir James Stirling. This magnificent ensemble sparks enthusiasm not only among architecture lovers.
