The Wehra reservoir is one of the largestpumped storage facilities in the world.

It produces 1.16 billion kilowatt-hours per year, more than half of total production of “Schluchseewerk AG” (local power generation company). This energy is created by the immense altitude difference (630 meters) from the “Hornbergbecken” (a basin located at about 1,000 meterabove sea level). The basin is 700 meters long, 300 meters wide and 46 meters deep. Its capacity is 4.4 million cubic meters, enough to run the machines of the cavern for 7 hours at maximum power. The water runs through a 1,385 meters long tunnel to the undergroundhydroelectricpowerstation.The four turbines produce 910MW of power– enough electricity for nearly 1 million people.
The cavern of the power station in Wehr has a length of 219 meters, a width of 19 meters, a height of 35 meters and its access tunnel is 1.3 kilometers long.
The “Wehrastausee” (Wehra reservoir) is the lower basin and has a capacity of 4.1 million cubic meters. Despite the use as a power station, there is a well balanced landscape around the reservoir.
