Freudenstadt
Beschreibung
A town in wild surroundings!
At the heart of this Black Forest town is the beautiful and extensive marketplace, which is the perfect place for a leisurely stroll or to take a break. From here it is just a short distance into the countryside, which visitors can explore by hiking or walking.
First-time visitors to Freudenstadt are always surprised by the marketplace. There is nothing of a comparable size in any other German town. Measuring about 200 by 200 metres, this forms the centre of the town. It is a popular destination for shopping, eating, relaxing and simply enjoying the atmosphere.
There is always something going on here, and not just when there is a festival, or when the market is being held. Visitors will find green areas and trees, 50 water fountains and a large playground. The arcades that border the square create a very special atmosphere. You can saunter past the shops below, and the nearest café or restaurant are never far away.
The same is true for the forest: this is less than a ten-minute walk away from almost anywhere in town. It is no coincidence that this spa town in the Black Forest national park has adopted the motto "A town in wild surroundings". If you want to experience its wild side, you can choose a suitable route from the dense network of hiking trails.
The audio-guide tour "Giant firs in Freudenstadt" ("Tannenriesen in Freudenstadt") introduces visitors to lots of lovely locations. This premium circular hiking trail starts in the marketplace. Thanks to the audio guide, you will learn all sorts of interesting facts about the things you encounter along the way. This includes the Großvatertanne (or grandfather fir tree). This is the biggest fir in the whole Black Forest, standing at 47 metres tall and with a diameter of almost 1.6 metres.
Hikers will find huts, cafés and inns ready to welcome them on their walks. The tour also takes you onto the Kienberg, Freudenstadt's local peak. Here visitors will be enchanted by the scent of 1,000 different varieties of rose in Germany's highest rose trail. An even higher position is occupied by the Herzog Friedrich Turm. If you can conquer the watchtower's 150 steps, you will have the town and Black Forest woodlands at your feet.
