Once again, the musicians of the SWR Symphony Orchestra bring a rich, rarely heard chamber music programme to the Whitsun Festival in Baden-Baden. We would like to highlight the unusual string quartet by the Russian composer Anton Arensky: the Rachmaninoff teacher exceptionally calls for only one violin, plus a viola and then, however, two cellos. The additional bass foundation created an atmosphere reminiscent of orthodox church music, which Arensky aimed for with good reason: his quartet mourns Peter Tchaikovsky, who had died shortly before.
