The programme of the current concert brings together three outstanding masterpieces. Each one has made history in its own right. Schubert's Quartettsatz in C minor anticipated Expressionism, as did Webern's six Bagatelles for string quartet, each of them a stroke of genius of atonal modernism. Berg's "Lyric Suite" finally tells a love drama. The suite was performed shortly after its completion in Baden-Baden, then a central venue for classical modernism. It was here that Béla Bartók heard the work and was inspired by it to write his fourth string quartet.
