Verdi's last masterpiece is based on Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor". In the musical version of this delightful comedy, German baritone Michael Volle sings his first Verdi role at the Met as the villainous knight Falstaff. The latter is lustily tormented by a trio of clever women and brought to his well-deserved punishment. Robert Carsen's much-lauded production is set in the countryside of 20th century England. The International Herald Tribune celebrated it as an "imaginative page-turner".
