After the drama in Salome and Elektra, Strauss longed for a more cheerful material, and so he pays homage to his greatest role model: Mozart, with a musical comedy in the style of "opera buffa". Even the plot of the comedy of errors about a nobleman chasing a maid is reminiscent of Le nozze di Figaro. Of course, Strauss remains a child of his time in his tonal language, especially through his lush, sensuous orchestration.
