A modern Mexican classic of magical realism forms the basis of the Royal Ballet's new full-length work, with Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon once again collaborating with the creative team of composer Joby Talbot and set designer Bob Crowley, who have also transformed Alice in Wonderland and The Winter's Tale into dance. The ballet is inspired by Laura Esquivel's novel - a gripping family saga in which the main character's emotions boil over and affect everyone around her in surprising and dramatic ways. In this co-production with American Ballet Theatre, Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra also serves as music consultant on Talbot's newly commissioned score, and Wheeldon has worked closely with Esquivel to transform her multi-layered narrative into an entertaining and engaging ballet.
