Description
From the 16th to the 19th century, the houses of the tanners stood one next to the other on the Gerberbach. In the protection of the city walls, the tanners found everything they needed to practice their trade. Guild meetings were probably also held in the house of the Büdingers. Only the red tanners, who tanned the skins of cow, calf and oxen, were allowed into the guild. This guild was not accessible to the white tanners, who processed deer, doe, goats, lamb and sheep.
The houses in Quergasse, Gerbergasse and Münzgasse were workhouses with open arcades leading to the workshops. The tanners used buckets to extract the water they needed from the Grundelbach. It was not until 1681 that they were allowed to irrigate their pits with a direct supply. Today, the "Gerberbachviertel" looks very picturesque with its winding streets and old half-timbered houses. Numerous former tanners' houses and tanners' workshops can still be seen in this district, which is located by the creek.
