The oath book of 1518 mentions the watchmen on the tower, which was also called the Hochwacht, theft, the Malefizturm or the Crime Tower. In the lower stone section there were three prisons on top of each other. On the upper half-timbered floor was the apartment for one of the two guards. The adjoined three-storey house was also a prison. It has housed the city’s archive since 1990.
The museum in the “Langen” provides information about the history of the old fortifications, about individuals imprisoned in the tower and life in former times. During the summer months, you can climb up the tower via numerous steps, passing the preserved prison cells to the former guard’s apartment, from which you can enjoy a beautiful view over Calw.
