Christians have been celebrating advent since the 7th century – the four weeks leading up to Christmas are traditionally the most atmospheric time of the year, filled with candlelight, the scent of baking and music. On this walk through the festively lit streets from the Jesuit church to the baroque palace with its impressive palace church, you will learn all about how advent was celebrated at court, among the middle class or in workers’ circles in bygone eras, in times of peace or war, and which pre-Christmas traditions are alive in modern Mannheim.
