An outing to the Wutach Gorge is an unforgettable experience for every hiker, hobby geologist, and budding botanist. The Wutach river has carved itself deeply into the landscape – the riverbed and the valley are still changing today.
The Wutach Gorge offers for young and old an unforgettable hiking experience. It is located in the heart of Germany's largest nature park - in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park. The Wutach Gorge is not for nothing called the largest canyon in Germany. Because during the tour through the 60 to 170 meters deep gorge, we come past rushing waterfalls, rugged valleys, adventurous wild rivers and come across the diverse flora and fauna.
From April to October, runs a hiking bus that takes us to the most important entry points into the gorge.
There are several different ways to enter the Wutach Gorge and its wild and romantic side valleys from Löffingen and its parts of town. This is the prime section of the long distance Ravine Route (Schluchtensteig). We hike upriver from the Wutach mill and marvel at the steep woodside and mountain walls in the narrow canyon. In some spots, there is only a small ledge between the vertical rock face and the rushing river. The river makes a grand impression here: the water, which trickled upriver over a distance of three kilometers, now gushes out of the mountain. The mouth of the Gauchach river is an ideal place to rest and the wild, romantic Gauchach Gorge is also another worthwhile hike. We Leave Kanadiersteg, a handsome covered bridge, behind on the right and continue on to Bachheim. The Rümmelesteg walkway leads to the opening of the Wutach River: The river makes a grand impression here: the water, which trickled upriver over a distance of three kilometers, now gushes out of the mountain. The tour takes us along imposing rock galleries to the former health resort Bad Boll. Today, we can no longer see that it was once a vacation paradise, where even Winston Churchill took pause. The last section takes us past the impressive waterfalls of Dierfurt until we reach the Schattenmühle mill.
Tip: For a shorter option of the Wutach Gorge Trail, there is the 3-gorge-path (dottet route).
Stable footwear and steady footing are required!
We recommend sure-footedness and a head for heights.
