The Klostersteig trail is a mirror of the history of Kniebis. On narrow paths, you'll see historic locations and experience unspoilt nature just as it was at the time of the abbey's original residents. This diverse trail takes you through thick forest, sunlit clearings, babbling brooks and wildflower meadows.
A detour will take you to the nearby Ellbachseeblick observation deck with views over the Ellbachsee lake and Mitteltal towards the Hornisgrinde, the northern Black Forest's highest peak.

From the abbey ruins you ascend via the Feuerwehrwegle path to the Speichersee lake and Rossbrunnen spring (detour to Ellbachseeblick viewing platform). Past the Alter Gleisweg track, which dates from the Zähring era, through forest and meadows with wonderful views over the village of Kniebis, and through the Abendwiese clearing, you reach the Platz der Besinnung (Place of Contemplation) before descending into the Forbachtal.
