LAKE CONSTANCE CYCLE TRAIL: All along the lakeshore
Pedalling is a great way to appreciate the history and beauty of Europe’s most scenic lake. The circular Lake Constance Cycle Trail (Bodensee-Radweg) runs through Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with plenty of reasons to stop en route. The full loop covers 260 km / 160 miles and is split into five or eight stages. These start and finish in the charming town of Konstanz. In between are Überlingen, Friedrichshafen, Lindau, Rorschach, Stein am Rhein and Radolfzell. Energetic cyclists complete it in two or three days. Those, who prefer a slower pace, with time to see the sights and linger over meals, should allow a week or so.
Explore Konstanz, the charming lakeside town that played an important role in Catholic history and boasts a striking modern statue at the harbour entrance. Worthwhile is a short side trip to marvel at the spectacular sub-tropical gardens on the island of Mainau. Photograph medieval castles such as Meersburg. Learn how prehistoric man lived in (reconstructed) stilt houses over the lake in Unteruhldingen. See where the Zeppelin, the world’s first airship, was born in Friedrichshafen. And, all along the way, enjoy great meals using fresh local produce: Felchen (a white fish from the lake), excellent vegetables and salads from Reichenau Island, local cheeses, apples and orchard fruits, as well as award-winning local wines, beers and ciders. Then snuggle down in comfy beds in your bike-friendly accommodation.
Families love this kind of break: the cycleway is wide; treats include stopping for a quick swim - and ice cream! Following the lakeshore means you can never get lost. And, if you fancy a shortcut, just hop on one of the regular ferries that crisscross the lake. Bikes are welcome and views are fabulous!
Start & finish: Konstanz, 2 hours south of Stuttgart
Decide for yourself at what pace you would like to cycle around Lake Constance. The most common way is in five stages. This way you have about 50 bike kilometers ahead of you per day. This leaves you enough time to enjoy the beautiful lake scenery in a balanced way.
Stage locations 5 stages:
- Constance - Ãœberlingen
- Ãœberlingen - Lindau
- Lindau - Romanshorn
- Romanshorn - Stein am Rhein
- Stein on the Rhine - Constance
If you don't want to miss any of the attractions along the way, we suggest you take the more leisurely route with only 30-40 kilometers per day. With this variant you will cycle around the lake in eight stages and have enough time for a colorful program besides cycling.
Stage locations 8 stages:
- Constance - Ãœberlingen
- Ãœberlingen - Friedrichshafen
- Friedrichshafen - Lindau
- Lindau - Rorschach
- Rorschach - Constance
- Constance - Stein am Rhein
- Stein on the Rhine - Radolfzell
- Radolfzell - Constance
Of course you can also arrange the stages according to your special wishes.

You feel like going around the lake, but you also want to go out for a fancy dinner and you can't and don't want to reduce yourself to the minimum of luggage?
Of course we understand that. Therefore, use the Lake Constance Cycle Path Luggage Service and have your luggage transported from one stage location to the other, while you enjoy your cycling day with only the most necessary day's luggage and without a heavy load.
