In 1848, the German people discovered their revolutionary streak and rose up against the dictatorship of their aristocratic leaders. Evidence of the impressive history of the German uprising can be seen in many locations in Mannheim. This walk tells the story of key revolutionaries such as Friedrich Hecker and Gustav Struve, who lived in the city on the banks of the Rhine and Neckar for a time, of women who fought for freedom, and of ideas and events that formed milestones on the path to democracy. After all, in Mannheim especially calls for freedom could already be heard before 1848, for example with the play “The Robbers” by Friedrich Schiller that had its première in Mannheim.
