The "Säbelthoma" takes us on a hike through dense forests, leads us to the mystical Mathisleweiher and the most beautiful vantage points. As a village policeman, he knows very well the old stories about Hinterzarten and tells us this.
Author's recommendation
Enjoy tranquillity at idyllically situated Mathisleweiher!
Directions
At the parking area behind the Kurhaus (spa building) we’ll already be welcomed by Säbelthoma. Here we start our tour through the Kurgarten (spa park) and along the Zartenbach stream to the playground in Wolfsgrund. Now we start the ascent to Hotel Sonnenberg and then follow the Westweg trail past the pond Kesslerhofweiher. Our next interim destination is the pond Mathisleweiher, which lies hidden in a nature reserve. Here we can take a leisurely break. Feeling invigorated, we then walk along the slightly ascending trail to Häuslebauernhof, where we can enjoy the panoramic view into Bärental valley and of Feldberg summit. We continue hiking through the dense fir forest up to Windeckkopf, where we can see down into the Dreisamtal valley, and with good weather we can see as far as the Vosges Mountains. At our next stop, the top station of the Thoma ski lifts, we can also enjoy a fantastic view. This time the view is above Hinterzarten as far as the mountain Hochfirst in the east, the mountain Weißtannenhöhe in the north and above the Höllental valley in the east. Now we hike across the meadow towards the cliffs known as Vincenz-Zahn-Felsen, and then climb down on a section of the adventure trail down to the Kurgarten (spa park) and return to the starting point at the Kurhaus (spa building).
Equipment
We recommend sturdy shoes.
