The expansion of the port as a goods terminal at the terminus of navigation on the Rhine and the connection to the railway network at the close of the 19th century created the necessary conditions for Mannheim’s industrial upswing. Leading entrepreneurs and inventors such as Heinrich Lanz, Friedrich Engelhorn and Carl Benz fostered this rapid development and their ideas, which have now become global companies, played a key role in shaping the transition from city of the Electoral Court to an important banking and stock exchange scene. On this walking tour, you will find out how working and living conditions changed during the course of the Industrial Revolution on the Upper Rhine.
