Description
The Allgäu region of Württemberg is the perfect destination for touring because of its network of tourist attractions. Starting in Bad Wurzach, this route leads directly through the "Gateway to the Allgäu”. Wurzacher Ried is home to the largest unspoilt upland moor in Central Europe, and what is known as "black gold", because of the health benefits of a soothing mud bath. The spa town of Wolfegg and the Allgäu villages of Kißlegg, Leutkirch, Wangen and Isny charm every visitor with their historical buildings, hospitality and highlights such as the glassmaking village of Schmidsfelden and Schwarze Grat.
About the stops
Bad Wurzach: The Kurhaus am Kurpark in Bad Wurzach not only serves beer, but also light culinary specialities. The nearby Vitalium is a real oasis of health and wellness. The Vogler Show Dairy in Gospoldshofen offers delicious home-made cheese in its Sennerstüble (Alpine dairymaid's parlour) and old cheese dairies are set up in the museum in their original style.
Wolfegg im Allgäu: The route continues over gentle hills past the healing health resort of Wolfegg. Wolfegg Castle majestically overlooks the Achtal valley and its baroque highlight is the former abbey church. The Allgäu-Oberschwaben Wolfegg Farmhouse Museum displays some of the history of Upper Swabia and the Allgäu through historical farmhouses.
Kißlegg im Allgäu: A special feature of the baroque church in Kißlegg is the famous Augsburg silver - and the Neue Schloss is also well worth a visit. At the Arla dairies in Zaisenhofen, you can buy speciality cheeses direct from the producer. The Farny brewery in Dürren is particularly well known as a wheat beer specialist. It is possible to go fishing in Kißlegg am Obersee and at Wuhrmühleweiher. The Spieß family farm in Amtzell-Blitzer offers cheese, bread and fruit brandies made on site.
Leutkirch im Allgäu: The Schmidsfelden glassmaking village is a real highlight here. Park Allgäu Centre Parcs offers a wide range of leisure activities. At the Leutkirch pond, you can try your luck at fishing or take a walk along the forest sports trail or nature trail. Allgäu cheese fresh from the wheel and Allgäu parmesan is produced by the dairy in Adrazhofen and Allgäu mountain cheese is available at the Boschen farm dairy in Friesenhofen. LandZüngle, a speciality beer from Leutkircher Brauerei Härle that is made from ecological raw materials, is only available in selected pubs and inns in the region.
Wangen im Allgäu: This 1,200 year old town, which is known for its historical buildings and numerous fountains, its excellent restaurants and friendly people, invites you to linger. Wangen has one of the most beautiful weekly markets in the region - the stalls have set up here every Wednesday since 1330. The Allgäuer Emmental dairy in Leupolz and the organic cheese dairy in Zurwies also provide an opportunity to buy regional specialities. The Saint Exupéry quotation and aphorism trail, starting in Argenbühl-Eisenharz, offers a unique hiking experience.
Isny im Allgäu: Last but not least, the journey leads to the thermal spa resort of Isny in Allgäu. A wide range of leisure activities awaits you there. A hike to Schwarze Grat, Württemberg's highest point (1,118 m) is a must. The DSV Nordic Aktiv Zentrum Isny-Maierhöfen boasts a large network of Nordic Walking routes and cross-country skiing tracks. At Brauereigasthof Engel you can enjoy freshly tapped beer from the Stolz brewery as well as beer-related dishes. Käsküche Isny is an artisan organic dairy, with raw milk supplied exclusively from organic and biodynamic farms.
