Upper Swabian Baroque Route - Main route

From the highest church tower in the world – Ulm Cathedral – to the opulently decorated library hall in Wiblingen Abbey, past the Großlaupheim Castle and monastery church in Gutenzell-Hürbel, via one of the most beautiful market places in southern Germany in Biberach, your journey will take you via Ochsenhausen, with its Benedictine Imperial Abbey, to Rot an der Rot, where a view of the monastery gives you a glimpse of the alps in the background.The scenic picture slowly changes as you go from the gentle, rolling hills of Upper Swabia at Bad Wurzach into the pre-alpine area of Württembergische Allgäu. Further along the route, visitors will find the magnificently furnished New Castle of Kißlegg, the Medieval Stadtoval in Isny, the Church of St. Martin in Argenbühl and the old town of Wangen with its views of the south. Achberg Castle and the New Castle of Tettnang are impressive and make you forget you are still in Germany. Indeed, the further you get through the fruit orchards on Lake Constance at Langenargen, the more the region seems like a little piece of Northern Italy. An organ concert in the Basilika in Weingarten, a visit to the Museum quarter and the towers in Ravensburg and attending the “Blutritt” (an equestrian procession in honour of a relic containing the blood of Jesus Christ) in Weingarten give an idea of just some of the culture that can be experienced in Upper Swabia. In Bad Waldsee, the town’s lake and the twin towers of the church of St. Peter dominate the townscape; in Aulendorf the castle and church make up one building that can be seen from afar, and in the Grünen Baum Hotel in Bad Waldsee guests can enjoy exquisite baroque dishes. The magnificent features of the library hall in the Schussenried monastery, the Wallfahrtskirche Steinhausen and the parish church of St. Katharina in Wolfegg are particularly outstanding. In the Upper Swabian museum village of Kürnbach you can immerse yourself in the baroque world and see things from the perspective of the ordinary folk of that time. Countess Paula welcomes guests to Aulendorf as part of an ensemble made up of castle and church, while Altshausen shows off an impressive baroque castle complex. In Bad Buchau, Abbess Maximiliana will lead you on a journey through times gone by and in Riedlingen the Weilerberg Chapel is well worth a visit. Further along the route, two beautiful churches in Oberstadion and Munderkingen await, after which you can learn about the link between beer and the baroque period in Zwiefalten and Ehingen.
