Weatherproof destinations in SouthWest Germany
Nobody likes it, but it's an inevitable feature of the winter months: foul weather. It's a fact of life. The conditions out there are grey, cold, damp, windy and just really unpleasant. Streets and paths are grubby, mushy and not at all inviting. Baden-Württemberg is famous for its varied countryside and outdoor destinations. But on days like these, the best option is to find somewhere snug and warm inside. The good news is that Baden-Württemberg also has plenty in store for bad weather days. Relax under palm trees and enjoy a South Sea feeling. Go on a voyage through history. Launch into space or escape into virtual reality. There is something to please everyone. And with all this variety, it doesn't matter if there is rain, wind, or snow. We present 6 indoor highlights that are guaranteed to thwart the bad weather.
1. Rulantica in Rust
Scandinavian-Style Water Adventures at Europa-Park
Is it cold and miserable outside? We have the solution. Rulantica in Rust is an indoor water park offering all sorts of water fun – whatever the weather. Rulantica is a fictitious island in the North Atlantic. There are lots of different attractions for visitors to enjoy, and lovely weather conditions too, of course. Rulantica offers a successful blend of Scandinavian style, classic Nordic landscapes and imaginative design. Mystical scenarios promise an unforgettable adventure. Nine themed areas with fantastical creatures create a magical atmosphere. If you dare, you can take a trip down the plunge slide in the "Vinterhal". At the end, you whoosh down a 1.5 metre free-fall drop into the water. Definitely not recommended for those of a nervous disposition. All this activity will soon take your mind off the daily grind. The indoor and outdoor pools also offer refreshments with their two swim-up bars. We highly recommend trying out the bubble loungers in 30 degree water. The exclusive "Hyggedal" sauna and rest area offers the perfect refuge for those seeking relaxation.
👍 By the way:
Rulantica is a spectacular experience for all the family, with something for everyone. There are specially designed areas for younger kids and plenty of restful options for those seeking relaxation. Even though the water park is very big, tickets are currently limited. For this reason, we recommend checking availability before setting off and advance booking is advisable.
2. Sensapolis in Sindelfingen
Magic, Adventure & Thrills
Outside Stuttgart's city gates, you will find the unique indoor leisure park Sensapolis. This is a place full of magic and adventure for the whole family. The highlight is the huge, romantic fairy-tale castle. Our youngest visitors will be transformed into princesses and princes. There are ornate rooms and dark secret passages. Talking plants tell funny fairy tales. You can fly through the air on a magic carpet. And a slide takes you down into the castle's spooky cellar, where little monsters and creepy experiments await. But there is so much more besides to discover. Fly through a shower of asteroids on a giant spaceship. Whizz round over three levels on the electric go-kart track. Take part in scientific research experiments and explore nature and the environment in the science area.
Time passes in no time, and you won't believe it's evening already. A single day is far too short to properly explore everything on offer at Sensapolis. You will just have to come back – there's bound to be another bad weather day some time.
👍 By the way:
Visitors are well catered for, too. We are thrilled to offer delicious, freshly prepared food from our very own catering service. Children's favourite foods are all on offer, of course. Pizzas are served from the wood-fired oven. Crisp salads come with our homemade bread. And our pasta is also homemade, and very high quality too, so you can tackle your next adventure full of energy.
3. Zeppelin museum in Friedrichshafen
Knowledge Makes you Smart: with 3D Cinema and Flight Simulator
The Zeppelin Museum brings innovations in technology and art to life, inspiring people to attempt the impossible. It takes a pioneering spirit to reshape the future. There are over 1500 exhibits, original photographic, film and audio recordings to explore. One of the highlights is the history of the Zeppelin in the museum's 3D cinema. How did Count Zeppelin get his airships built? Who were the adventurous pioneers of airship travel? Cross the blue gangway to access the faithful partial reconstruction of the LZ 129 Hindenburg. The largest surviving piece of wreckage bears testimony to the Hindenburg disaster and the end of airship aviation. And don't miss a trip on the Zeppelin NT flight simulator. When else are you going to get a chance to navigate and land a Zeppelin? The Zeppelin Museum also has a large art collection. It houses the great masters of classical modernism.
👍 By the way:
A museum suitcase is available to guide young and old alike on their trip through the museum. A hand symbol encourages visitors to learn and collect items at various stations around the museum. These tasks are even more fun if you work as a team. Take the suitcase home with you as a reminder of a fabulous visit.

6. RASTATT RESIDENTIAL PALACE
Time Travel with Sense and Sensibility
In 2022 Baden-Württemberg is celebrating its 70th anniversary. But in fact, our history goes back much further. And every era provides its own testimony full of beauty and sometimes also frivolity. "Love – Desire – Passion" have had far-reaching impacts on each successive generation. That is why this is the central theme for 2022 in our stately homes and gardens. We are ready to travel back into the sensual past of our historic buildings.
For example, the Rastatt Residential Palace is the first baroque residence in the Upper Rhine region. During this anniversary year, a very special guided tour will be available there. This will tackle the dichotomy "Between politics and private life". We will be travelling back to the time of the Magraviate of Baden. In those days, it was rare for the nobility to allow their children to marry for love. A child's destiny was more often determined by their parents' political motives. But perhaps love existed beyond marriage. Wouldn't it be interesting to examine love and its many facets through the ages?
👍 By the way:
To mark the anniversary celebrations in 2022, tours and events will be focused around "Love – Desire – Passion". Deep religiosity and an ardent commitment to God are recurrent themes here. But so too is a passion for collecting, cabinets of curiosities and exotic gardens. There is so much to look forward to, a year that will be packed with desire, sense, and sensibility.
