Description
Esslingen Castle towers over the historic Old Town of Esslingen am Neckar with its characteristic silhouette of the High Watch Tower, Ropers’ Walk and Big Tower - and yet it was never a castle at any time.
Knights and princesses never lived in Esslingen Castle - it was only part of the northern-most massive town fortifications. First mentioned in a document in 1314, the fortifications of the Imperial City of Esslingen were further extended between 1519 and 1531.
The Big Tower was built in 1527, but it was not until 1887 that its roof was added, modelled on the towers of Nuremberg Castle. In 1976/77, the Big Tower and the castle grounds were thoroughly renovated for the 1200th anniversary of the town.
Burgplatz
The inner castle grounds with their fountain and flowerbeds surrounded by shrubs are modelled on medieval Gardens of Eden. Circular flowerbeds set into the lawn dominate the outer castle grounds. Every summer, splendid public events such as open-air cinemas, classical, jazz and rock concerts take place there. The view over the city and the Neckar valley to the Swabian Alb is extremely impressive. The short ascent from the castle can be made comfortably via the footpath through the vineyard.
A large children's playground on the outer castle area is ideal for the little ones.
