Description
An informative tour leads you from the geological beginnings of the region all the way to the present. The Keckenturm tower, built in 1240, features exhibits centred on the history of the imperial city on its eight floors. It also displays an exquisit selection of small sculptures by the important German sculptor Leonhard Kern, who worked in the area in the 17th century.
A big collection of painted shooting match targets shows scenes from everyday life and pictures pointing at political events. The functioning replica of a 4 m-high medieval treadwheel crane in the educational room is an attraction not only for children. In the city mill, a former grist mill, the local history from the French Revolution until the end of the 20th century is shown. Here the changing methods of salt production from Celtic times until the 19th century are explained, based on models and numerous historic documents.
A special highlight in the section on Jewish life is the synagogue wainscoting, painted by Elieser Sussmann (1738 / 1739) – witness of Jewish culture which are unique in Europe.
