From the 717-metre-high Schlossberg, the view sweeps unhindered over the Upper Filstal and into some side valleys with ancient Alb ascent routes. Whoever had this exposed mountain in his hands was armed against attacks and controlled the traffic routes. These advantages were already recognised and appreciated in prehistoric times.
This is why the walk of about 45 minutes up the Schlossberg is recommended on a clear day. Once at the top, culturally interested visitors can also enjoy the castle ruins, which house the permanent exhibition "History in the Tower": The settlement of the Schlossberg dates back to the 11th century, as archaeological finds and building investigations have shown. The castle's long history is preserved and kept alive by its own association, which supports exhibitions and regular guided tours in the summer.
In the keep of the "front castle", a permanent exhibition on two levels informs visitors about the history of Hiltenburg Castle and provides insights into the everyday life of its inhabitants.
