The vegetable of princes made its initial appearance in the local fields in 1850. The economist Max Bassermann embarked on its first large-scale production in 1870 and processed asparagus in his canning factory. Court gardener Gustav A. Unselt began in 1910 to breed high yielding varieties that cemented Schwetzingen’s renown as a magnet for asparagus lovers.
