The first documented reference to a church in Schwetzingen's “lower town” was in 1305. In 1435, the patron church of St Pancras was mentioned. It was used from 1698-1703 as a double church for both confessions, but after that the reformed congregation had to make do with makeshift premises. The present protestant city church (since 1821) was built in 1758.
