For decades, the murder hole has been explored again and again, new passages discovered and surveyed. In the process, an incomprehensible labyrinth of passages, crawlspaces, halls and lakes of varying sizes has been discovered.
The Mordloch near Böhmenkirch-Steinenkirch is one of the most interesting caves in the Schwäbische Alb for cave researchers. When it rains, the water in the cave rises very quickly - in February 1977, four reckless sports divers were trapped in the cave for 57 hours by high water and freed in a spectacular rescue operation.
Depending on the water level, up to 80 metres can be walked. However, sure-footed, waterproof shoes and bright torches are strongly recommended for an excursion. The deeper exploration of the 4,382-metre-long cave with its labyrinth of passages, crawl spaces, halls and underground lakes requires diving equipment and is reserved for experienced cave divers
.
A legend tells how the cave got its name: Several hundred years ago, a poacher murdered the Eybach castle ruler and hid him in the cave. The dog of the ranger searched for and found his master. A little later, the murderer fell from the Ravenstein rock and confessed his crime on his deathbed.
