Museum of Tannery
Without water, there’s nothing to do with tanning. Since the 15th century, the tannery trade has been one of the most important branches of trade in the city of Calw. The tanners settled mainly on the Nagold, because they needed plenty of water for the tanning process. The skins were hung in the Nagold and watered there. The sewage was also discharged directly into the river. It was probably a bad-smelling business, which is why the tanners were not exactly one of the most popular craftsmen.
Beschreibung
The tannery museum has been reopened since the 4th July 2021.
The building of the Weisstannery Balz was built around 1800 on the Nagold shore, not far from the St. Nicholas Chapel. The building, which is characteristic of the region, has a typical timber-framed structure above its massive brick basement, which is designed in a constructive way and was plastered on the occasion of a visit by the King in 1899. The water workshops with historical machines are located on the ground floor and in a brick annex on the Nagold river, which was built to expand the production rooms. The rooms on the first floor were used with the furnishings of the tannery as a furry room and a dressing room. Today, the dry processing of hides and skins and their measurement are shown here. In the former residential floor above, a documentation provides information about the tanning tradition in Calw, the different methods of tanning and the corresponding end products. The two dry floors show fur drying and wool transport and are also used for temporary exhibitions with a focus on arts and crafts.
