It is known today that the trees were planted in 1828 and at that time were no more than one and a half meters high. Thus, the plane tree avenue is the oldest still existing in Germany. The island itself was not created until around 1910, when the small flood and industrial canal was built to the south of the avenue. The plane tree avenue begins at the Neckar bridge and ends at the Silcher monument, where the path continues into the so-called "Seufzerwäldchen" and where lovers used to meet.
The plane tree avenue is identity-forming for Tübingen and one of the most important open spaces in the city. However, the plane trees have actually reached the end of their service life due to the high groundwater level of the Neckar Island. For many years, the plane trees have therefore been regularly and rigorously inspected. Wobbly candidates are already connected by ropes.
Spring, summer, fall and winter: The plane tree avenue is beautiful and photogenic in every season.
