An exciting programme with a kind of "ninth symphony": a quartet, in other words, in which a singing voice has been added, comparable to the choir in Beethoven's last symphony. Schönberg's second string quartet with an additional soprano solo is a milestone in 20th century chamber music. One often wonders why the composer included an "Oh dear Augustin, everything is gone" in it. Did he mean the Romantic tonal language or was he referring to his crumbling marriage? After all, this quartet is so passionate that the Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, also a specialist in relationship dramas, used it as a model for the film music for his classic "Speak to Her".
